DIY - Sewing a changing mat
Hannah Dahle
Sewing instructions for a portable changing mat made of softshell.
I'm Hannah and in this tutorial I'll show you how to sew a changing mat without a pattern that you can easily fold, fill with changing accessories and store compactly in your handbag.
By the way, the changing mat is perfect as a gift for the birth 😉
Suitable for beginners
The project is very easy and quick to sew.
In my instructions, I attach great importance to explaining each step in such a way that even beginners can understand everything. I also give you useful sewing tips and fabric recommendations.
Fabric recommendation
I got all my fabrics from our family-run fabric shop. www.leinenlodge.de
Softshell fabrics are the ideal choice for the changing mat!
Softshell is water-repellent and easy to wash. If you do make a mess, the material can simply be washed in the washing machine at 30°C.
The left side is also made of fleece, which cushions the changing mat from the inside and makes it more comfortable for the child, even if you have to change diapers on the go and cannot find a comfortable surface.

Make yourself comfortable
In addition to the sewing itself, my main focus is on us spending a good time together. I want to encourage you to make yourself really comfortable and to approach the project in a relaxed manner. Maybe you want to make yourself a tea, prepare a snack, light candles... Whatever it is that gives you a feeling of security and calm, integrate it into your sewing routine.
